It was home to significant Black institutions such as the first Black YMCA and YWCA, and the first Black-owned movie theater. The neighborhood did take a hard social and economic hit at a certain point in history. However, the innovative and resilient community has redeveloped the area into the historical and cultural hot spot it is today.

Wright Dunbar Historic District
The neighborhood was designated a historical district in 2002. It is comprised of historical homes and newer built houses that were specifically built to match the historical aesthetic. Most of the homes were built in the early 1900s and are of the Victorian architectural style.
Recently, Charles Simms Development began construction on 26 three-story townhomes in the Wright Dunbar Historic Business District, providing more housing opportunities.

The residents of the neighborhood take the quality of life there seriously. They have a thriving neighborhood association, The Wright Dunbar Village Neighborhood Association. They take pride in the place they live and continue to make it a great place to call home.
